South Dakota Road Transportation


The road transportation in South Dakota comprises of interstate highways, state routes and bridges. SDDOT is highwaycommitted to ensure safe, convenient and reliable road transportation in South Dakota so as to provide easy connectivity to various cities and states.

The interstate highways form an important part of inter-regional corridors in South Dakota. The important interstate highways in South Dakota are Interstate 29, Interstate 229, Interstate 90 and Interstate 190.

Interstate 29: It passes through western portions of Sioux Falls and serves as a bypass around southern and eastern Sioux Falls.

Interstate 229: It runs just more than 16 km mostly within the city limits of Sioux Falls.

Interstate 90: It traverses east–west through the southern half of the state.

Interstate 190: It runs for about 3.2 km south, connecting I-90 to downtown Rapid City.

The Office of Highway Safety helps develop and implement traffic safety programs designed to reduce the number of Highway Safetyinjuries and fatalities and traffic crashes occurring on South Dakota roadways. It provides technical and financial assistance to state and local government agencies to implement the programs.

Bridges in South Dakota
